Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A native of Montreal, he was commissioned a Captain in the 57th New York Volunteer Infantry with the outbreak of the Civil War. Serving with distinction in some of the major battles of the war, he would receive minor wounds during the Battles at Antietam and Chancellorsville. In June 1863 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and then to Colonel in May 1864. For his services during the war, he was brevetted Brigadier General of Volunteers on March 13, 1865.
