COUNCIL, Va. Mr. Harry Byrd Compton, age 72, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at his home.
Born Oct. 30, 1934, in Bee, Va., he was a son of the late Evans and Isa Maine Powers Compton. Byrd was a retired carpenter and had lived most of his life in the Council area and was a well-liked member of the community. He owned and operated a hardware business at Council and made many friends throughout the years. He was very devoted to his family and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jewell Compton, Donald Dee Compton and Lowell Chalmer Compton, and two sisters, Eulah Mae Compton and Thirsey Alice Hay.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Phyllis Jean Tiller Compton; four sons, Randy Byrd Compton and his wife Barbara of Rosedale, Va., Larry A. Compton and his wife Carol and Kenny Compton and his wife Becky, all of Council, and Jerry Compton and his wife Diane of Honaker; one daughter, Shelia Ramsey of Council; two brothers, Fate Compton of Stafford, Va., and Major Frelin Ray Compton of Lebanon; five sisters, Roxie Vicars of Radford, Va., Ina Southall of Roanoke, Va., Etta Tiller of Council and Betsy Hess and Jean Gilbert, both of Davenport, Va.; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Honaker Funeral Home, with Brother David Harris and the Rev. Giles Ball officiating. Interment will follow in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A Mountain, Va.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and Jimmy Hiner, Curtis Ray, Mike Charles, Robbie Charles, Vernal Boyd, Kevin Tiller and Allen Nuckles. Honorary pallbearers will be Ferrell Tiller, Jim Tiller, Ed Duty, Guy Tiller, Dennie Tiller and Ronnie Tiller.
Friends may call at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Friday, where a song service will be conducted at 7 p.m.
