John Caldwell and wife Mary J Davis Caldwell had five children. Their first child was William C Caldwell, born March 15, 1835. He married Jan. 14, 1864, to Sarah C. Baucom, who was born Nov. 16, 1840, in Sangamon county, They reside eight miles southwest of Springfield. --EARLY SETTLERS OF SANGAMON COUNTY - 1876, By John Carroll Power

Oldest child of John and Mary Jane Caldwell, born March 5, 1835. Survived by brother Congressman Ben F. Caldwell, the youngest child. Two sisters and a brother died in infancy. He was twice married, his last wife having died in November, 1897. His father died in 1863; his mother in 1895. Member of Loami and Springfield Masons. He was highly educated, having graduated at Shurtleff college at Upper Alton. He resided on a farm near Loami for a number of years but since the death of his wife he resided in the village of Loami.
