Inventor. Born in Tunstead, England, he was one of the most notable engineers of the 18th Century. He was a pioneer canal builder, who constructed the first English canal of major economic importance. Beginning as a millwright, he designed and built an engine for draining coal pits at Clifton, Lancashire, in 1752. In 1759, he built a 10-mile canal to transport over the River Irwell. His creative new canal lock system was so innovating, he was responsible for a network of canals totaling about 360 miles which helped to hasten the Industrial Revolution. He died at age 56 in Tunstead, England.
