August Leroy Brown was born June 17, 1833 in New York. His family moved to Carrelton, Illinois when he was three months old. In April 1856, he moved to a farm near Champaign, Illinois, and about 1865 he moved into the city. In June of 1855 he married Lucy E. Hay; she died in 1876. On October 8, 1878, he married Manerva Jane Walrath. They had no children. Brown served as a law enforcement officer for many years; first, as city marshal, then as justice of the peace, and finally, as the school district's truant officer. The Brother was raised in Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M. on April 18, 1859. He was elected a life member of the Lodge on May 9, 1887. He died December 2, 1890 and was laid to rest by the Craft in Mt. Hope Cemetary.
