Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Huta Komorowska, then part of the Austrian Empire, Adam Kozłowiecki came from a noble family. Entrusted to a private school in Poznań after showing a particular interest in the Society of Jesus while attending their school in Chyrów, he soon renounced his title and noble heritage to join the Jesuit Fathers, which he did in Stara Wies on July 30, 1929, beginning his novitiate year in Borzozów. Undergoing studies at the Jesuit faculty of philosophy of Kraków, at the magisterium in Chyrów and at the Bobolanum theological faculty of Lublin, he took his final vows in Rome on August 15, 1945, having been ordained priest on June 24, 1937 in Lublin, by Msgr. Karol Niemira. Arrested by the Gestapo on November 10, 1939, he was incarcerated in Kraków and later interned in Auschwitz between June and December 1940 and in Dachau from December 1940 till April 29, 1945, when he was freed by the US Army. After teaching briefly at the Jesuit school of Pullach, he volunteered as a missionary to the Jesuit mission in North Rhodesia, present day Zambia, where he performed pastoral work, especially in the educational field at Kasisi between 1946 and 1950, when he was named apostolic administrator of the apostolic vicariate of Lusaka. Appointed its apostolic on June 4, 1955 by Pope Pius XII, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Diospoli Inferiori on the following September 11 from Msgr. James Robert Knox. Named as the first archbishop of Lusaka on April 25, 1959, following its elevation to a metropolitan see, Kozłowiecki resigned the pastoral government of the archdiocese so that an African prelate could be named ordinary, being transferred to the titular see of Potentia in Piceno on May 29, 1969. Director of the Pontifical Missionary Society of Zambia, he ultimately resigned also this post to hand it over to the young upcoming African priests. Working hard in the missions of Chikuni, Chingombe, Mulungushi and Lusaka in spite of his advanced age, in 1987 he was named companion of the Order of Freedom of the Republic of Zambia and in 1995 was decorated with the Commenda of Merit of the Republic of Poland by President Lech Walesa. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal priest in the consistory of February 21, 1998 with the title of Sant'Andrea al Quirinale. Continuing to live in Lusaka, following his elevation to the cardinalate he was decorated with the Légion d'honneur of the Republic of France on December 21, 2006. The Cardinal died on Friday, September 28 of the following year at 8.30 am., in a hospital in Lusaka and was buried on Friday, October 5 beside the city's metropolitan cathedral of the Child Jesus.
