Mrs. Mary Baker Died Yesterday - Widow of Col. John Pope Baker-Niece of Mrs. Abraham Lincoln-Was Born and Reared in Springfield --- Mrs. Mary Wallace Baker, widow of the late Col. John Pope Baker, of the United States Army, died at her home in West Edwards street Sunday morning, Sept. 11, 1911, of paralysis, following an illness of several years.
Mrs. Baker was born in this city on July 15, 1842, the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. William S. Wallace and she resided in Springfield until after her marriage to Colonel Baker.
Mrs. Baker was a niece of Mrs. Abraham Lincoln and when she was a young lady spent considerable time in Washington as the guest of Mrs. Lincoln at the White House.
The deceased was married in this city on Nov. 15, 1865, at the home of her parents to Captain John Pope Baker, and a short time thereafter moved with her husband who was a captain in the U. S. army, to Camp McDermit, N. Y. Her husband was appointed Major and paymaster.
Just before the death of Colonel Baker, he and Mrs. Baker resided in St. Louis, Mo. and the colonel made that as his headquarters. Prior to that time he had been stationed in the west where his duties called him. He was in Cuba during the Spanish-American war.
Colonel Baker died on Feb. 14, 1907, in St. Louis and was buried in Oakridge cemetery in this city. Following his death, Mrs. Baker moved to this city and since that time has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Walter Patteson and two other daughters, the Misses Mabel and Florence Baker. Mrs. Patteson is a daughter of Mrs. Baker.
Surviving the deceased are three daughters, Mrs. Walter Patteson and the Misses Mabel and Florence Baker; three sons, Wallace F. Baker, of St. Paul, Minn., Francis J. Baker, of Portland, Ore., and Lincoln T. Baker, of St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, William F. Baker, of Danville, IL and Edward Baker, of St. Louis, Mo.
The funeral will be at the family residence, West Edwards street. The interment will be made in the family lot at Oakridge cemetery.
