Ida's mother died when she was about eight years old. Her father was a miner. "Day care" and foster homes were not something of that time and place. Ida lived with farm families and worked for her keep as best she could. She and her brother Itha Elma were twins; sometimes they would work for the same farm family. Ida never married. In her early adult years, she supported herself as a dressmaker. Then she worked as a servant in private homes, working for older people.
