The daughter of Swiss immigrants, she was born in Olney, Richland, Illinois. While still a young girl, her family moved to the city of Evansville, Vanderburgh, Indiana. She married her husband there in 1866 (see his memorial page for more information on their married life and family). A resident of Oakland, Alameda, California for over forty years, she died at the home of her daughter Mary Barbara Berger and her son-in-law, Walter Jory.
