Wife on Don Ameche dies in Dubuque
DUBUQUE, IA. - Honore Prendergast Ameche, 78, the wife of film and radio star Don Ameche, died Friday of a heart ailment at Stone Hill Care Center in Dubuque. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Church of the Nativity in Dubuque. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery in Dubuque.
Mrs. Ameche was born in Dubuque and met Don Ameche when he was a student at Columbia College, now Loras College. They were married in 1932. After their marriage, the Ameches lived in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Phoenix.
Mrs. Ameche lived in Dubuque for the past 12 years, residing with her brother, Jerome Prendergast. She spent the last eight months at the Stone Hill Care Center.
Don Ameche now resides in Santa Monica. The couple was separated.
Don Ameche appeared in several radio productions, including a starring role in "The First Nighter Program," in the 1930s. Among his most famous film roles was his protrayal of Alexander Graham Bell in "The Story of Alexander Graham Bell." He recently won an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in "Cocoon."
His son, Don Jr., said his father is currently working on a film with Geraldine Page and Shelly Winters in New Jersey and will not be able to attend the funeral services.
Besides her husband, survivors include four sons, Don Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., Ron of Iowa City, Tom of Lexington, Ky., and Larry of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Bonnie Steltenkamp of Cleveland, Oh., and Connie Bringanti of Sterling, Va., a brother, Jerome Prendergast of Dubuque, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
