James was the first and only child born to James Arthur Fitzgerald and Josephine Gertrude Ackerman. He married Dorothy Jean Stickney on October 3, 1936. They had 3 children, Michael James, Michele Jean and John Patrick. Jimmy, as he was called, managed several Detroit area restaurants. He was the manager for Fox and Hound's Restaurant in Bloomfield Hills and Chuck Joseph's on Grand River Avenue in Detroit. But Menjo's, on 6 Mile in Highland Park, was what he was most known for.
