Dean Rice, 50, passed away Monday, Dec. 19, 1955 at his home in Hood River, Ore. following an illness of nearly four years.

He was born south of Farnam on June 30, 1905 to Jacob B. and Mary Luella (Lydic) Rice.

He attended schools in the Farnam area, in Peoria, Arizona and in Hutchinson, Kansas. He married Mabel Winner of Hutchinson, Kansas on Oct. 19, 1925. They made their home in the Farnam area for 28 years before moving to Hood River, Oregon in 1953. They divorced in 1955 and later that year he married Allyen Pheil.

Dean farmed, operated a trucking business and a movie theater prior to purchasing a partnership in an International Harvester dealership. He was a charter member of the Farnam Lions Club, and had been a member of the Farnam Volunteer Fire Dept. and the town and school boards. Failing health prompted semi-retirement and a move to Oregon in 1953. He worked for a short time as a partsman for the International Harvester dealership in Hood River, Ore.

He is survived by his first wife, Mabel Rice of Westminster, Colo. and his second wife, Allyen Rice; a son, Dale (Sue) Rice, of Westminster, Colo.; two daughters, Marjorie (Chuck) Farnstrom of Gothenburg, Nebr., and Carol (Horace) Hertel of Hood River, Ore.; three step-children, Mrs. Gerald Montet of Long Beach, Cal., Norman Pheil of Treasure Island, San Francisco, Cal. and Gary Pheil of Hood River, Ore.; a brother, Jay L. Rice of Farnam, Nebr.; three sisters, Nellie A. Rice, Elizabeth (Harvey) Klooz and Mrs. Laura Day all of Farnam.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services in Hood River were at 2 PM Tuesday, Dec. 20, 1955, at the Anderson Funeral chapel with Rev. Dowell A. Callis officiating. The remains were sent to Gothenburg, Nebr., for services in Farnam, Nebr., and internment in the Farnam Cemetery.
