Obtaining a degree cum laude in theology, Don Artemio served as professor at the Seminary of Bedonia, until his appointment as parish priest of Casaliggio, a post he held until 1938, when he was transferred to the parish of San Vitale of Salsomaggiore.
Aged 45, Prati was named Bishop of Carpi by Pope Pius XII, following the resignation of Msgr. Vigilio Federico Dalla Zuanna OFM. Cap., receiving his episcopal consecration on February 24, 1953, from Cardinal Adeodato Giovanni Piazza OCD., assisted by Archbishop Umberto Malchiodi and the named Archbishop Dalla Zuanna, inside the parish church of Salsomaggiore.
Member of the Episcopal Commission for Social Problems and Families, Bishop Prati participated in the Second Vatican Council and served furthermore as president of the Episcopal Commission for Pastorality on Work, and successively of the Commission for Religious. He retired from the pastoral government of his see after thirty years in office, on April 7, 1983, and was succeeded by the late Bishop Alessandro Maggiolini (1931 – 2008).
Following his retirement, Msgr. Prati moved to Piacenza, where he resided with his relatives at Stradone Farnese, and where he passed peacefully away at the venerable age of 97, on March 4, 2004, after 74 years of priesthood, and 51 of episcopate.
His funeral Mass was celebrated at Carpi's Cathedral, presided by Msgr. Carlo Caffarra, future Cardinal Archbishop of Bologna, with over thirty presbyters concelebrating, including the late Msgr. Maurizio Galli, former Bishop of the Diocese of Fidenza.
