Lucy had an 8th grade education. She was two months short of 15 when she ran away with the boy she loved and married him. They were living in Vermilion County, Illinois, and went to Berrien County, Michigan, to marry because of their ages. They married on February 26, 1917, and returned to Vermilion County, Illinois. Lucy's mother was so distraught at her young daughter marrying that, when Lucy returned, Lucy's mother locked Lucy in a closet in an attempt to prevent the marriage from continuing. The marriage lasted for 61 years, until her husband's death in 1978. Three sons were born to the union: George, Elmer, and Garold. Lucy and her husband moved to the Niles, Michigan, area in 1940. For 37 years, Lucy owned and operated the Quick Convalescent Home of Niles, Michigan. Lucy was a member of First Baptist Church.

Lucy loved clocks. She was something of an obsessive collector of clocks, and the walls of the front room of her small home were filled with clocks of all sorts. And she loved hats and big clunky jewelry.
