Giles Duncan began his Civil War service with Company D of the 71st Indiana Infantry in August 1862 and was injured slightly at the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky. In February 1863 the 71st Indiana Infantry became the 6th Indiana Cavalry and he served the remainder of the war as a Wagoner in Company D of the 6th Indiana Cavalry. He married Mary Ann Duncan, a distant cousin, in October 1862 and they had three children after the war. He died on his farm in Harrison Township, Clay County, Indiana at the age of 41 in 1879.
