Mrs. Ackerman, Veteran Teacher, Dies, Burial to Be in Weedsport
Mrs. Mattie Buckland Ackerman, retired principal at William McKinley School, died at her home, 206 West Beard Avenue, Syracuse, at 2:30 a. m. yesterday. She had been in failing health a long time and, in anticipation of death, wrote a sketch of her life some time ago.
Mrs. Ackerman was born in the Town of Brutus, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin I. S. Buckland, 76 years ago. She attended Port Byron Academy and prepared for her teaching career at Oswego Normal School. Mrs. Ackerman also studied at Yale and Syracuse Universities and University of Chicago.
Mrs. Ackerman was married to the late Dr. William Ackerman in San Diego, Calif., in 1886. He died six months after their wedding and Mrs. Ackerman returned to Syracuse to resume teaching. She was appointed first assistant to the principal of Putnam School and in 1904 was appointed first principal of William McKinley School. Mrs. Ackerman served to that capacity until her retirement in 1926.
Mrs. Ackerman was a charter member of South Presbyterian Church and was author of the church history which is sealed in the cornerstone of the church at South Salina and Colvin streets, Syracuse. She was a member of the Y.W.C.A., American Red Cross, Visiting Nurse Association, Monday Study Club and Onondaga Historical Association. She was a charter member of the Friends of Reading and the Commonweal Club.
Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. W. H. Coe of Auburn and Mrs. Wilfred Halliday of Greenville, R. I., and three nephews, Benjamin B. Chappel of Staten Island, St. Clair S. Chappel of Auburn, and Paul R. Chappel of Cayuga.
Rites will be conducted at the home at 2:30 p. m. tomorrow by Rev. Dr. John T. Reeve, pastor of South Church, Syracuse. The body will be taken to Weedsport for burial.
