Guilford A. Amoroso Jr., 44, a federal law enforcement officer in Philadelphia for many years, died of a heart attack Monday at his home in Mechanicsville, Va., where he had lived for 3 1/2 years. Born in Bryn Mawr, he previously lived in Wayne.

Mr. Amoroso served as a police officer in Easttown Township, Chester County, from 1969 to 1971. He went on to work for the next 14 years in the Philadelphia office of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

Mr. Amoroso was transferred to the agency's Richmond, Va., office in 1985 as special agent in charge. He held the post until last year, when he was promoted to the DEA's internal security division in Washington. For the last 10 years, he also was national coordinator of the DEA's investigations of outlaw motorcycle gangs.

The DEA recently decided to name its new Richmond building in Mr. Amoroso's honor.

Mr. Amoroso was a 1962 graduate of the Haverford School and a 1965 graduate of Villanova University. He served the Navy from 1965 to 1968.

Surviving are his wife, Jean M. Dougherty Amoroso; daughters, Viki, Cynthia, Jeanette and Lisa, and his parents, Guilford Sr. and Bessie Amoroso.

There will be a viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Alleva Funeral Home, Lancaster Avenue, Paoli, with services at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, at the funeral home. Interment is at Riverside Cemetery in Norristown.
