James Emett was born to Silas Emett and Elizabeth Trowbridge, He had 2 sisters. He married Pheobe Jane Simpson13 Apr 1823 in Boone,Kentucky. They had 11 children, Moses Simpson, Mary Jane, Elizabeth,Lucinda James Emmett II, John S, Jane, Malinda,Marinda, Joseph and Sarah Catherine. After the birth of his last child he decided to go to California and try his luck there. His 2 older children were married and gone. The last 5 of 7 children had died. So he decided to leave his wife and 2 children in Council Bluff, Iowa while he took his 18 year old daughter Lucinda to California with him.

He decided to make a place in San Bernadino, California, USA. They had no farming implements so they planted Watermellon and squeezed the juice out and made syrup to sell. It was a hard life.

James died 28 Dec 1852 in San Bernadino, California.

Lucinda eventually got back to her family in Utah.

Excerpts from a Story from Granddaughter Nancy Porter Moffett written in 1948.Also his friend Sanford Porter states he died in San Bernadino, CA in his history.

**I am adding an adjustment to this because we recently found his death and estate notice in the Shasta newspaper. Next to that posting was one addressed to Lucinda from Danford Freeman that Lucinda then refutes in the following newspaper. So, he did die in Shasta and not the Mormon settlement of San Bernadino.
