"Streator, Ill., Jan. 11 -- L. D. Howe, who was certified by the federal pension bureau as the 'youngest enlisted man' in the Union armies during the war between the states, died in St Mary's hospital tonight at the age of 86 years. Death resulted from injuries suffered in a fall.

Mr. Howe was born in Waukegan in 1850, and when the civil war began was just under 11 years of age. His father was bandmaster of the 15th Illinois regiment and young Howe begged to be allowed to go to war with him. The elder Howe used his influence and got him into the army as a drummer boy. He was 10 years and 11 months old. Howe served with the 15th and later the 55th Illinois regiment, witnessing many battles.

Surviving Mr. Howe are three sons, Dr. L. D. Howe, Jr., Arthur Howe and Orion Howe, all of this city." Chicago Tribune (Chicago, Illinois), January 12, 1937
