He was born to Moses Simpson Emett and Catherine Dorcas Overton. He had 6 siblings. He married Emma June Lay, 2nd Apr 1872 in Utah. They had 12 girls Catherine Sytha, Emma Jane,Alice Lillian, Clara Electra, Julia, Susan Ann, Solena Bell, Rose Nell, Elizabeth Ellen, Pearl M, Bessie and Zelma Gruwell. and 3 boys, James Simpson II, William Moses, George Franklin and John Taylor.
He was one that ran Lee's Ferry, Arizona. He was opisitional to the Grand Canyon Cattle Company when they fenced public land and he cut the fences for his cattle to graze. They tried to charge him with Cattle Rustling but it didn't stick.Tho at that time in Flagstaff he met and befriended Zane Grey. Grey wrote 3 books about Emmett and his family. An article published in 1923 was called." The man who influenced me most" That was James Simpson Emmett. The Cattle Company got back at him when they bought Lee's Ferry from the LDS church and fired him. He was a respected man.

He was buried in the Hinckley Cemetery but when Emma died they moved him to lay beside her in Cedar City Cemetery.
