Cinematography Pioneer. Born William Edward Green, he was a portrait photographer credited by many as the inventor of cinematography. In 1889, he received a patent for a constructed camera for taking a series of photographs on a roll of perforated film moving intermittently behind a shutter, the basic principle of a motion-picture camera. He also experimented with stereoscopic cameras and color film projectors.
