Roman Catholic Cardinal, Theologian, Author. He was a traditionalist Catholic Priest and professor who authored 27 books and around 800 articles. Born of a wealthy, distinguished family (his father was Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, and his uncle C.I.A. chief Allen Dulles), he was educated in private schools in America and Europe, but not raised in the Presbyterian faith of his fathers, and was an agnostic by the time he entered Harvard in 1936. In 1939, the experience of seeing a tree in bud while walking along the Charles River in winter led to a religious awakening; he joined the Catholic Church around the time of his graduation from Harvard in 1940. His 1946 book "A Testimonial to Grace" details his conversion. After a year and a half in law school, he joined the Navy for WWII, serving in intelligence (and also contracting polio which was to trouble him in recent years). Dulles joined the Society of Jesus in 1946, was ordained in 1956, and took his doctorate from Gregorian University in Rome in 1960. He taught at Woodstock College in Maryland from 1960 to 1974, at Catholic University of America in Washington from 1974 to 1988, and at Fordham University from 1988 until his death. A theological conservative, he sided with the Pope on controversial issues, stating "Christianity would dissolve itself if it allowed its revealed content, handed down in tradition, to be replaced by contemporary theories". Among his more noted works were "Models of the Church" (1974) and "The Reshaping of Catholicism" (1988). From 1991 until 1997, he served on the International Theological Commission. Dulles was created a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II on February 21, 2001, the only American theologian ever so honored. Over the years, he held 15 visiting professorships, and was awarded 21 honorary doctorates.
