Daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Hon. Arthur Francis Southwell and Mary Anne Agnes (Dillon) Southwell.

Sister of Sir Thomas Arthur Joseph Southwell, Bt, KP (4th Viscount Southwell) and Jane (Southwell) FitzGerald.

Wife of Field Marshal Sir Henry Evelyn Wood, VC, GCB, KCMG. They married 19 September 1867 on the Isle of Wight, Hampshire. A "religiously mixed marriage" (now a rather archaic term), Hon. Mary Paulina Southwell was a member of the Roman Catholic nobility and Henry Evelyn Wood was an Anglican. Their six children were raised as Catholics.

Their children include Colonel Evelyn FitzGerald Michell Wood, CB, OBE, DSO (1869-1943), Colonel Charles Michell Aloysuis Wood, CMG, DSO (1873-1936), Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Herbert Wood (1877-1940), Anna Paulina Mary (Wood) Fanshawe (d. 1929), Marcella Caroline Mary (Wood) Blount (d. 1946), and Victoria Mary Eugenie (Wood) Balfour (d. 1961).
