He graduated in 1943 from the University of Georgia with a bachelor of science degree. He earned his master's degree from St. Lawrence University in 1970.
He enlisted in the Army on June 8, 1942, and served until Feb. 18, 1945. He continued to serve in the Army Reserves until 1968, when he retired as a Major.
On Oct. 25, 1947, he married Marian Moore in Pasadena, Calif. She died Aug. 20, 1998.
He moved to Canton in 1947 to assume the duties as manager of Kraft Foods, where he served for 15 years. He then went to work in the Business Office at St. Lawrence University, and later became the director of budgets and assistant to the Vice President for Business, retiring in 1986.
From 1970 to 1998, Mr. Brackett served as Clerk of the Canton Central School District. He served as the Town and Village Historian in 1993.
Mr. Brackett was active in several organizations including the United Fund of St. Lawrence County, the Monsignor Griffith J. Billmeyer Playground Committee, American Cancer Society, Canton Garden Club, Out-A-Fit Hunting Club, St. Lawrence County Historical Association, the Stillwater Club of Canton and the First Baptist Church. He was a longtime member of the Canton Rotary Club, serving as president from 1961 to 1962.
He was an avid bridge player and enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.
