Gaius Caesar
Birth: unknown
Death: Feb. 21

Roman Statesman, Soldier. In 17 BC he was adopted by the Emperor Augustus, who named him as his successor. In 6 BC, when he was only 14, he was appointed Consul Designatus, and given the right to sit in the senate house. He was also made a Prince of Youth, one of the symbolic heads of the Equestrian Order. Temples and statues were erected in his honor, including the Maison Carrée in Nimes. In 1 BC he commanded the army that was sent to Syria to strengthen Roman power in Armenia. In 1 AD he was made Consul with Lucius Aemilius Paullus as his colleague. In 4 AD he was wounded during a siege in Lycia, and he died soon afterwards in Artagira, Armenia, at age 24. (bio by: js)
