Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Veiano, Beniamino Cavicchioni graduated in theology and in utroque iuris from the La Sapienza University of Rome and was ordained priest in December 1859. Resigning a lectureship position in Vetralla in order to pursue his studies, he entered the studio of the Sacred Congregation of the Council being named as one of its officers in 1872. Assigned as minutante of the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda Fide in 1875, he was put in charge of the United States of America section. Defender of the matrimonial bond of the Sacred Congregation of the Council, he was named domestic prelate of His Holiness with the personal title of Monsignor. Aged forty seven, Cavicchioni was elected archbishop of the titular see of Amida and named apostolic delegate in Ecuador, Perú and Bolivia, receiving his episcopal consecration on April 27, 1884 inside the church of Santa Maria dell'Assunta annexed to the North American College in Rome. Named canon of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica on July 4, 1885, he was transferred to the titular see of Nazianzo on January 11, 1894, and was furthermore assigned as pro-secretary of the Sacred Congregation of the Council on October 22, 1895 and later its secretary on January 11, 1900. Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of June 22, 1903 with the Title of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. Participating in the conclave of 1903 which elected Pope Pius X to the Papacy, he was appointed by the latter as prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Studies on March 11, 1910. The Cardinal died in Rome the following year and was laid to rest the local Campo Verano Cemetery.
