Son of the Rev. Richard Appleton and Ellen nee Wagstaff, of Kirkdale, Liverpool. Served in the South African War.

His friend Lieut. Colonel Brereton Fairclough described him as being "a kindly hearted, quiet, unobtrusive, Christian gentleman".

TERRITORIAL OFFICER'S SAD DEATH. MAJOR APPLETON SHOT AT TUNBRIDGE WELLS. THE INQUEST. VERDICT OF "ACCIDENTAL DEATH." The officers of the 4th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment, who have been stationed at Tunbridge Wells since October, have lost an esteemed and valued colleague by the sad death of Major Frank Appleton, who was found shot in a lavatory at 6, Oakdale-road, Tunbridge Wells, on Sunday morning. An enquiry into the circumstances of Major Appleton's death was conducted at the General Hospital.
