Seward graduated from Drury College in 1880 and from George Washington University of Law in 1882. He specialized as a Patent attorney and was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of the US in 1901.

Seward's daughter Edna was trained in in France (1912-1913) as an Opera singer. The Haseltine Opera company played in Chicago, Ill. and other places. Edna was a contralto. Edna graduated from Drury College, spent a year in the New England Conservatory of Music at Boston, taught music in the high school at Joplin, then entered the Grand Opera Company of Kansas City, Mo.

Also in the Haseltine Opera Company were Miss Una Haseltine, a high soprano who studied voice in Kansas City. Una also appeared with the Grand Opera Company of Kansas City, Mo. Their youngest brother Robert also sang in the Opera Company
