As a small child Jennie Shelby moved with her family from North Carolina to Perry County, Alabama. There she married her first husband, John James Simons, on October 24, 1867. The following year the young family joined both of their extended families in leaving Alabama for Smith County, Texas. Shortly after their arrival, in December of 1869, her husband died from pneumonia. Their second son, James Elmo Simons, was born two months later. For the next six years, Jennie and her two sons, Cicero and Jim, lived with her parents. Then, in 1876, she married George Thomas Dunklin, the widower of her cousin, Lorena Isabella Henderson. To this union were born an additional eight children.
