He was born March 5, 1944 in Spur. He spent his early years in Dickens County and returned in 1988 coming from Brady. He married Barbara Shipman on July 14, 1975 in Nacogdoches. he was a wildlife damage control specialist for the U.S. Government. He attended the Church of the Nazarene and was a Mason.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Stephenson, Afton; two sons, Dee Smith, of Brady; and Monroe Dee Stephenson, Lorenzo; two brothers, James Stephenson, Dickens; and Barney Stephenson, Afton and one sister, Bonnie Hawkins, Shallowater.
