He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Mark Alan Merritt. Survived by his wife, Nell Avants Merritt; 2 daughters, Debra Chelette and Susie McLendon; and one son, Jody Merritt. He's also survived by a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren, including great granddaughter, Danielle Hickman.
