Richard Farrington
Richard Farrington, 84, died at noon Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, in Primrose Place.
He was born in Springfield, Mo., Dec. 7, 1912, the son of Judge John S. Farrington and Blanche McCann Farrington, and whose sister and brothers were, Virginia F. Vreeland, John S. Farrington, Jr., Sam S. Farrington, and Charles M. Farrington, all of whom predeceased him.
He was married to Dorothy M. Heying on Dec. 28, 1950, until she died June 23, 1993.
He is survived by Sam S. Farrington, Jr., nephew, and his wife Kathleen, Jackson, Miss., S. Lawrence Farrington, nephew, and his wife Jan, Jackson, Miss., Richard F. "Dick" Vreeland, nephew, and his wife, Nancy, Chatham Township, N.J., John S. "Jack" Farrington, nephew, and his wife, Beverly, Huntsville, Ala., Anne F. Hudgings, niece, and her husband, Harry, Ash Grove, Mo., and a number of grand-nephews and grand-nieces, three of whom bear his name.
In 1929 he graduated from Springfield High School; attended Drury College from 1929 to 1932, and was a member of Kappa Alpha Order; attended the University of Missouri School of Law (Columbia) from 1932 to 1935, graduating with LL.B and J.D. Degrees, and was a member of Phi Delta Phi Legal fraternity. He was licensed in August of 1934, and was a member of the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association (President) 1964), Missouri Bar and American Bar Association.
He commenced practice in 1935 with the law firm of Farrington & Curtis (composed of his father and Arthur M. Curtis); in 1941 to 1943 was Assistant Prosecuting Attorney of Greene County under William R. Collinson; in 1942, volunteered in the U.S. Naval Reserve; was a lieutenant (j.g.) serving in the North Atlantic theater of operations, and at Saipan, Mariana Islands until October of 1945, when he received an honorable discharge.
He then resumed private parctice with Farrington & Curtis, until he retired on Jan. 1, 1995; was Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Missouri under John M. Dalton from 1953 to 1956 and 1958 to 1960; and was a U.S. Bankruptcy Court Trustee from 1965 to 1985. He was Secretary and Campaign Manager for the Greene County Democratic Central Committee in 1940; was Chairman from 1950 to 1954; was a member of the Democratic State Committee from 1954 to 1958; and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1952.
He was a member of the American Judicature Society, the Law School Foundation, the Law Society, and the Jefferson Club of the University of Missouri. He was a longtime member of Hickory Hills County Club (President from 1971 to 1972), the Missouri Senior Golf Association, and was an active and enthusiastic golfer. He was a member of the American Legion and the Elks Club (E.R. from 1949 to 1940). He was a Christian, but had no active church affiliation.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997, in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel with Dr. Mark W. Randle officiating. Interment of the cremated remains will follow in Hazelwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
