Rev. Bertil Gustaf Peterson was the son of Charles August and Hulda Elizabeth (Johnson) Peterson. He was the husband of Winifred Beth (Salisbury) Peterson. They were married Jamestown, New York June 27, 1936. He was a minister in the Erie Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church/Western New York Conference and Central New York Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church/United Methodist Church.

PETERSON.--Rev. Bertil G. Peterson, age 79, a former member of the Western New York Conference, died on Friday, November 4, 1994 at the home of his son, B. Gary Peterson of Hingham, MA, where he had lived the previous two months. At the time of the church union which formed The United Methodist Church in 1968, Rev. Peterson was serving as Pastor of the Kidder Memorial Church in Jamestown, NY. In 1971 he was appointed to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Newark, NY, and became a member of the Central NY Conference (now North Central NY).
He was born January 15, 1915 in Jamestown, NY, and was a 1934 graduate of Jamestown High School, and a graduate of the Moody Bible Institute in 1949. He was ordained in the Erie Conference of the EUB Church in 1953. Prior to apointment to Kidder Memorial, he served as pastor of the Mayville-Magnolia EUB Church, and White Memorial EUB church in Buffalo. From 1953 until 1961 he traveled in the United States and Canada as an evangelist. He served on the Camp Findley Bible Conference Committee, and the Conference Boards of Evangelism of the Erie and WNY Conferences.He devoted himself to the ministry of Rev. Solomon Muwanga in Uganda, raising funds and sending supplies to Africa. In 199O he traveled to Uganda, where he preached and played his trumpet in United Methodist congregations in the Jinja area. The Petersons United Methodist Church and Peterson Memorial Primary School were established in his honor, and in memory of his wife, Beth, who died in August 1992. Rev. Peterson was a member of the Lausanne World Evangelism, "Good News," and the Mission Society of The United Methodist Church. He taught in the School of Evangelism at the Buffalo campus of Houghton College.
He is survived by his son, two grandchildren: Gustav and Margretta Peterson, of Hingham; two sisters, Neva Carlson of Jamestown and Evangeline Nelson of Sturtevant, Wisconsin, and a brother, Robert Peterson, of Sinclairville, NY. Funeral services were held November 8, at Hillcrest Baptist Church, Jamestown, where Rev. Peterson served as interim pastor. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Jamestown. Memorials may be made to the ministry of Rev. Solomon Muwanga, Uganda, c/o Mrs. Donna Marsteiner, 17 Jackson St., Lyons, NY or to Hospice of South Shore, 1OO Bay State Drive, Braintree, MA O2184-9O6O.
