Ruby Smith was born on May 8, 1907 in Haralson County, Georgia to Jacob Breckinridge Smith and Eliza Ellen Crawford Smith. She was the third youngest of ten siblings and half-siblings. All of the siblings were expected to work hard for the good of the family. Ruby usually worked in the house while her two youngest sisters worked in the fields, butcher shop, or wherever they were needed.

Ruby married a man whose last name was Hendrix. Their daughter, Lura Ellen Hendrix, was born on July 5, 1924. I have no further information on Hendrix.

Ruby later married Ivey Watson Davis, and they resided on Tallapoosa Street in Bremen, Georgia for about 50 years. Ruby and Ivey had three daughters: Mildred Davis and two [still living] daughters.

Ruby worked as a seamstress for Sewell Manufacturing Company in Bremen, Georgia. She retired after more than forty years with the company. She loved flower and vegetable gardening, and she was an immaculate housekeeper. I can remember visiting with her many times with my mother or grandmother when I was younger. My impression of Aunt Ruby was that she was a very gentle, quiet woman.

In her later years, she developed Alzheimer's Disease. I can remember visiting her in Haralson County Nursing Home, and she would be sitting in a world of her own. She would be making the same sewing movements that she must have made for many years on her job. Ruby and two of her sisters, Irene Munroe and Lillie Bolden, all ended up in the same nursing home in their last years. They were together at the end of their lives as they had been in the beginning.

Ruby passed away on Aug. 29, 1996. Her funeral was held at Hightower Funeral Home Chapel, and she is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Bremen, Georgia. At the time of her death, she had 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
