f/o William H.,Martha,Ruby,Mary,Fay Married to (1)Emma Ragsdale (2)Martha Brown. s/o Jefferson Meneley & Sarah Bell.

Pvt. Meneley, 40th Co., 165th Depot Brigade, had sailed on the troopship "Tuscania" from New York City on 24 January 1918. Howard was left ashore in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, due to illness. He thereby escaped the torpedoing & sinking of the "Tuscania" on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland & Ireland by German submarine UB-77. His surname was misspelled on the "Tuscania" passenger roster as Menely.

Howard then sailed to war aboard the "Chicago" in April 1918 with Overseas Casual Company #136. He returned from World War I aboard the "Regina de Italia" in April 1919 as a private in the 9th Infantry.

On all his voyages, he listed his wife, Mrs. Emma Meneley, of Sasakwa, Oklahoma, as his next-of-kin.******************************

Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone.
The name and date are chiseled out
On polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
you died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spread out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
And come to visit you.
