James first married Corintha nee Matthews Vanpool on 26 January 1843 in Jefferson County Iowa. He was living with the Indians and she with her father Osee Matthews in Liberty Township.

On 06 Jan 1879 in Columbia Co., WA., at age 62, he married 20 year old Ella Jackson. In 1880 he filed for divorce which was granted. The marriage lasted about one year.

from: PIONEERS OF MARION COUNTY, Consisting of a General History of the County by Wm. M. Donnell. Des Moines, Iowa: Republican Steam Printing House. 1872. SCGE# 04182

In the spring of 1844, Ray Alfrey and wife (Corintha) moved in and occupied the cabin of Mr. Bedel, he boarding with them. During their residence here of two or three years, a feeling of jealousy on the part of Mrs. Alfrey, in consequence of the inconstancy of her husband, resulted in the first divorce case in the county. The case was successfully conducted by J. W. Alley. Mr Alfrey had left the country at about the time the Indians did, and returned to find himself a "grass widower," when he soon disappeared the second time, and his whereabouts is not known.

In researching the WA. State Archives I could not find a death date or place of burial. James is not listed in the 1900 Federal Census in Washington. I did find a newspaper article in Lewiston, ID. stating that a James R. Alfrey was to receive a Pension. I believe this James is my James. Lewiston is next to Columbia Co., WA. It is likely James may have gone back to the Indians and lived among them in ID. He is not on the 1900 ID. Federal Census. I have my work cut out for me!!
