US Congressman. He graduated from South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) in 1820, studied law, and became an attorney in Newberry in 1822. From 1838 to 1839 he served in the South Carolina House of Representatives. In 1840 he was a successful Democratic candidate for the US House of Representatives and served one term, 1841 to 1843. In the House he was a supporter of his cousin, John C. Calhoun, and argued in favor of nullification, states' rights and the expansion of slavery to new territories and states. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1842 and returned to practicing law. In 1848 he served in the South Carolina Senate. He suffered a paralytic stroke in 1852 and died from its complications.
