US Congressman. The son of Charles and Mary Moore, two of the earliest white settlers of Spartanburg County, he was raised on their plantation, "Walnut Grove", which still stands and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Thomas Moore enlisted for the Revolution as a teenager and took part in the Battle of Cowpens. After the war he became owner and operator of his own plantation, "Fredonia." Moore served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1794 to 1799, and was one of the founders of Spartanburg County's first high school. In 1800 he was a successful Democratic-Republican nominee for the US House of Representatives and served six terms, 1801 to 1813. He left the House to take part in the War of 1812 and served as a Brigadier General of the South Carolina militia, later receiving command of a division and promotion to Major General. He was again elected to the US House in 1814 and served one term, 1815 to 1817, afterwards returning to Fredonia, which he operated until his death. Fredonia was listed on the National Register of Historic Places until it was destroyed in a 1977 fire. His nephew Andrew Barry Moore served as Governor of Alabama and a descendant, John Hamilton Evins, served in the US House.
