The RCA Corporation offered Armstrong a million dollars for his patents but he refused and gave patents to the US Government to use at no charge in exchange for his lab expenses. He also developed the FM frequency assignments required for television sound and the coax cable material used for signal transmitters. He was posthumously elected by the International Telecommunications Union in Geneva to the roster of electrical greats.
