Philip Jacob Zent was the son of Michael and Salome (Schmidt) Zent. He was the husband of Catherine (Ubelhoer) Zent. They were married July 21, 1817. They immigrated to America in 1827 and settled in Williamsville, Erie Co., New York. Catherine died January 23, 1863. Philip was a butcher. They probably attended the United German and French Church.

The Village of Williamsville was incorporated November 4, 1850. One of the first officers was Philip Zent who was elected as one of the trustees. On the 15th day of January 1835, the citizens held a meeting and resolved to purchase a fire-engine. Philip Zent was one of the persons who agreed to pay his portion of the cost of the fire-engine in the ratio of his taxes for the previous year. He was also one of the early postmasters.
