Death of an Old Settler

Andrew W Griffin passed away yesterday. Death came to him suddenly at his home in Sycamore township. Andrew Watts Griffn, an old and highly respected citizen of Sycamore township, who has for years resided on his farm about two and one-half miles northwest of the Krone school house, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at his home.

It was about 2 o'clock when he told his children he believed he would go out and feed the stock. As he started he said he felt sick at the stomach but believed he would get relief if he could vomit. He sat down and without another word fell over dead. He had not been feeling well for several weeks but did not think his illness was in the least serious.

He was 70 years, 3 months and 11 days old and is survived by four children. His wife died on the 15th of January just two years ago.

Mr. Griffin was well and favorably known by the older settlers of this county. His brother John L. Griffin, was elected register of deeds (sic) of this county in 1832.

The time of the funeral will not be decided until a daughter and son living in Colorado and a daughter living in Kansas City are heard from.

South Kansas Tribune, Wed., Jan. 17, 1917

A. W. Griffen, 70, died of apoplexy, at his home Sunday, Jan. 14, at 4 p. m.

He was born in West Virginia, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Griffen, who Settled on Farm Ridge about 1870.

Of his brothers we have known Adam, now in Canada; Samuel, now dead, William, of Sparks, Okla.; John, residence unknown; Adonijah, somewhere in Texas, and Peter of Edmond, Okla. We also knew one sister, Mrs. Hugh McNutt of Stroud, Okla. Mr. Griffen was married in the fall of 1870 at Radical City, to Miss Dicey Mayfleld, who died Jan. 7, 1917.

There are four living children: Edward of Colorado; Everett of the Valley; Mrs. Jennie Schuman of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Effie Lobaugh, Who lived at home with her father.

A. W. Griffin was a blacksmith by trade. He came to this county in 1869 with the Colonel Sam Young colony, and for some time conducted a shop at old Radical, and held down a claim that is now owned and occupied by Mr. Scott, one mile south of Sycamore. He sold this farm to J. F. Mayo and moved to Neodesha, where he operated a shop for some years, then bought the home where he died. He took an active part in politics as a Republican, and was not slow to express his views and stand by them, and in the early days was always present at any political gathering, and was township trustee one term. As long back as we knew him, and that was to 1869, he was a member of the Methodist church though of late years he seldom attended, and we could never convince him that the world was growing better.

The funeral is being held this Wednesday, at the home, in charge of Rev. Mr. Kuhns of Lafontaine, and interment in the Krone cemetery.
