Elsie's parents were:
Marion Thomas Cagle (1865 - 1946)
Josephine Mathis Cagle (1864 - 1908 )

Elsie had one brother and two sisters: Barney, Birdie, and Ethel.

She had some memories of her mother smoking a corncob pipe. Her father worked in a coal mine. Each day he would take his lunch to work in a bucket that served as a lunch pail. When he came home, the bucket would be filled with beer, which they drank like iced tea.

Elsie's mother died on 14 Dec 1908, from Peritonitis when she was a little over 10 years old. Her father had been gone from home since that August. Perhaps to Texas.

After her mother's death, Elsie and her siblings went to Texas. She traveled by train and took her pet dog, Mabel, with her. Pets weren't allowed on trains with passengers, but the conductor felt sorry for her because her mother had died, and she was so upset.

On April 13, 1910 (Federal Census)
Elsie, age 11, lived with her widowed father, Marion, on Broions Ferry Road in Gainesville, Cooke Co, TX where he was renting a farm. He did general farm work to support the family.

Elsie met her future husband, James Calvin Dodson, at a meeting she and her sister, Birdie, attended in Altoga, TX. James, known as Jim, lived in Altoga with his parents. His cousin, Luther Vance, were staying with them.

Church meetings were held at Vineland on Hackberry Creek in Altoga. During the week, the building was used as a school house and was called Hackberry School. On Sunday, it became Vineland Church. The church was used by preachers of different denominations, and everyone went to the meetings no matter who was preaching. Elsie and her sister, Birdie, had come all the way from Sivells Bend to play music for the church service. Elsie played the guitar, and Birdie played an accordion. The meetings often provided a way for adults, as well as young people, to get together and get acquainted. On this occasion, the meeting was being conducted by a Holiness preacher.

Jim and Luther attended the meeting, hoping to meet some new girls. After the meeting was over, they wasted no time in getting acquainted with Elsie and Birdie. They were immediately taken with the girls, but only Jim and Elsie's relationship lasted.

Jim and Elsie had a short courtship. Her father obtained their marriage license in Marietta, Oklahoma, on April 10, 1915. They were married in Marietta the next day by Rev. R.A. Crosby. Jim was 23 years old, and Elsie was 16. He and Elsie went to his home to live with his parents.

Washita River Days
In 1925, Jim's parents helped finance his new business called "Jim's General Store" near Mead, Oklahoma. The back of the store was supported by long pilings buried in the bank of the Washita River. Their house, a short distance from the store, was built on stilts on higher ground to protect it from flooding. Blue Ribbon School was located nearby and was also used for church meetings.
