Marion Thomas Cagle, my g-grandfather, was born the day after Christmas 1865 on a farm in Johnson Co, IL owned by his parents, Nathaniel & Sarah Vinton Cagle.

Marion attended school occasionally, only a few days at a time, until about the third or fourth grade since he was needed at home to help his father with the work. Even though the work was hard, he said that his home life was comfortable and happy. His mother was a member of the Baptist Church, and this was also his church of choice.

Marion had a good outlook on life and said, "I never had an enemy in my life." He felt that he always tried to mind his own business, didn't have ill will toward anyone and always had plenty of friends. He said he enjoyed games, sports, music and radio programs. At about the age of 40, he had pneumonia and later said, "It almost got me."

He stated that his father, Nathan, died from a "bad fall" and his mother, Sarah, died from pneumonia.

When he was 78 years old, he became confused and weak, using a cane to help him get around. For about two years he had been having physical and mental problems, which were growing worse. His wife, Mildred, had to watch him constantly and finally was no longer able to care for him. She was upset and worried about his condition and afraid he might hurt himself or her. Their only income was an old age pension of $27.50 per month so the only choice for medical care was in Wichita Falls State Hospital.

Marion was admitted to the hospital on Dec. 4, 1944, and was happy to be in a place where he could be cared for and have, "plenty of food to eat." The doctors considered him to be an intelligent and pleasant old man with a kindly disposition.

His condition worsened while he was there. On July 11, 1946, he died from general arteriosclerosis and its complications. He is buried at Wichita Falls in the Rosemont Cemetery, in Block L, space 9, row 1. No other relatives are buried nearby.
