Friedrich Eugen served as Duke of Württemberg from the death of his older brother Ludwig Eugen in 1795 until his own death two years later. For most of his life he had lived at and managed his family's French enclave of Montbeliard, until it was taken over by the short-lived Rauracian Republic in 1792 and then annexed by the French Republic in 1793.
In 1753 he married a niece of Frederick II. of Prussia (Frederick the Great), Friederike Dorothea Sophia von Brandenburg-Schwedt. Together they had 12 children.
One daughter (Sophie Marie Dorothea von Württemberg) married Russian Zsar Paul I. Another daughter (Elisabeth Wilhelmine Luise) was the first wife of Francis II., Emperor of Austria.
