Paul G. Cavicchia, 91, of Sparta, formerly of Newark, passed away at the Morris View Nursing Facility, Morris Plains, on Oct. 28, 2008. A funeral service will be held at the Galante Funeral Home, 54 Roseland Ave., Caldwell, on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at 10 a.m. The interment will be at Fairmont Cemetery, Newark. Mr. Cavicchia was a lifelong resident of Newark until he moved to Knoll Heights Village, Sparta, 12 years ago. He graduated from West Side High School and attended American International College, Springfield, Mass.; Rutgers University, Newark, and the American Institute of Banking, Newark. Mr. Cavicchia was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946 as a military policeman with the 768th MP Battalion Prisoner of War Escort Duty, and at the Indian Gap Military Reservation. He served overseas with the 6th USAAF Panama Canal Zone unit and had attended the Army School of Information and Education at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va. In 1946, upon returning home from the U.S. Army, Mr. Cavicchia was appointed as an investigator with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, where he served on the Homicide, Confidential and Court squads until 1961. He then became an investigator for the banking and insurance industry in the Newark area. Mr. Cavicchia briefly returned to Essex County enforcement when he was appointed to the newly-formed Essex County, N.J., Welfare Dept. Fraud & Irregularity Squad, where he and his team were credited with successfully preparing 42 indictments within a two-week period. Mr. Cavicchia continued his family's tradition of serving the people of the City of Newark through his appointments by Mayors Addonizio and Gibson to the Newark Human Rights Commission (chairman), as commissioner on the Newark City Planning Board (seven years), and as a member on the Advisory Committee of the Newark Fire Department. He also served on the board of directors of the Boys Club of Newark, Broadway Branch. Paul was predeceased by Adeline (nee Ambrose), his wife of 64 years; his mother, Anna Bella (Auger) Cavicchia, and his father, former Congressman Peter A. Cavicchia (R-11D, NJ 1931-37), the first Italian-born congressman of the United States. The Hon. Peter A. was the former head of the N.J. State Inheritance Tax Division and president of the Newark Board of Education. Paul was also predeceased by his brother, Eugene, and sister, Priscille. Paul is survived by his son, Peter A. II, former special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service, Newark, N.J., field office, and his wife, Jennifer (nee Perillo). He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Paul G. II and his wife, Lorraine, Janine Pompeo and her husband Mario, Peter A. III and his wife Nicole, and Kathleen Cavicchia; great-grandchildren, Mario and Nicholas Pompeo, and Joseph and Gabrielle Cavicchia. Mr. Cavicchia will always be remembered for his integrity, love, and respect for his family and friends as well as his civic-minded dedication in serving the City of Newark as a volunteer and as a law enforcement officer serving the citizens of Newark and Essex County.
