Robert Shelley Waite, Sr. and his first wife Margaret (Dillon) Waite founded Waite's Bakery & Deli (aka Waite's Fine Foods), a restaurant, bakery, grocer and ice cream parlor that operated in Birmingham, Alabama from 1923 to the mid-1980's (original location at 2101-7th Avenue South in Southside, second location at 2012 Cahaba Road in English Village). At the time of his death, his official title was president of the Waite Dairy Store Company.
Mr. Waite was born in Easonville, Alabama (a town later submerged in the mid-1960's when Alabama Power dammed the Coosa River to create Lake Logan Martin). He served as a First Lieutenant in the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division, Army Expeditionary Force during World War I and was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. His citation reads: The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Robert Shelley Waite, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Cunel Woods. France, October 11, 1918. Although shot through the arm, Lieutenant Waite, with his company, charged a machine-gun nest. His attempt being unsuccessful, he reformed his company and again attacked this time silencing the nest and capturing it.
