Roman Emperor. He was born into a peasant family in approximately AD 270. He served in the army, reaching the rank of tribune before being adopted by the Emperor Galerius. He ruled the Middle East and the southern part of Asia Minor as Caesar under the joint Emperors Constantius I and Galerius, before spending several years at Caesarea in Palestine. In July AD 306 Galerius was forced to accept Constantius I's son, the future Emperor Constantine, as Caesar in the West, and in AD 308 appointed Maximinus and Constantine "Filii Augustorum". He was unsatisfied with the title, however, and began calling himself Augustus in AD 310 while campaigning in Persia. When Galerius died in AD 311, he concluded a treaty with his rival Licinius to split the Emperor's territory between them. He then campaigned against the Armenians, until AD 313 when he learned of an alliance between Licinius and Constantine, and marched with his army against Byzantium and then Heraclea. While he was laying siege to Heraclea his forces were routed by the army of Licinius and he was forced to flee disguised as slave. He was again defeated by Licinius at Cicilia, and fled to Tarsus where he committed suicide by taking poison in the summer of AD 313.
