Funeral for Ira F. Wintermute of Novato, retired Air Force Colonel, will be held tomorrow at 8 p.m. at Hamilton Air Force Base chapel. Wintermute, 61, died Sunday at a San Francisco Hospital after a long illness. Born and reared in Salem, Ore., he went on to enter the Army Air Corps as an aviator cadet at Fort Lewis, Wash. In 1937. He spent 30 years in the service and retired in 1968 after spending four years at Hamilton Air Force Base. He was base commander at Payne Air Force Base near Everett, Wash., from 1954 to 1957. During his career, he earned the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Geraldine F. Wintermute of Novato; two sons, Rand Wintermute of Portland, Ore., and James Wintermute of Novato; two daughters, Cheryl Anderson of Salem and Kim Wintermute of Novato; a brother and sister, Earl Wintermute and Veda Walker, both of Fresno; and two grandchildren. Military burial will be at Willamete National Cemetery in Portland.
