John Howard Ayers was born February 20, 1919 near Winnetoon, Knox County, Nebraska the eldest son of Niles Fred and Leola (Miller) Ayers. John graduated from Winnetoon High School in 1936 and worked as an electrician and telephone repairman. John served with the U.S. Army during World War II (1942-1945) in Japan and the Philippines and was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war, John joined the Nebraska State Patrol on September 1, 1947 and was initially stationed in Fairbury and Fairmont. On April 1, 1950, John married Jeanne Wolcott Harrington. John retired from the Nebraska State Patrol in 1978 having achieved the rank of Major. John passed away on Sunday, April 27th. He is survived by his children Scott Ayers of Richardson, Texas; Bruce Ayers and Lynn Ayers both of Lincoln. Also, his stepdaughter Judy Harrington of Lawrence, Kansas; his daughter in-law Serri Rivers Ayers of Richardson; his grandchildren Tori and Jessie Ayers of Richardson and Caitlin Mentzer of Lincoln; his sisters Laura Schaben of Garner, Iowa and Benita Mangimelli of Omaha; his brothers Edward Ayers of Yankton, South Dakota, Fred Ayers of David City, Nebraska, and Bill Ayers of Winnetoon, Nebraska. John is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Ayers in 1993. Funeral services at Butherus, Maser & Love 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29th. Visitation on Monday from 3:00 – 9:00 p.m. Burial in Wyuka Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers: Nebraska State Patrol Class of 1947. Pallbearers: George Fauver, Larry Hanus, Del Whitefoot, Bobby Clinkenbeard, Mike Behm, Duane Hamann. Memorials to Lincoln's Child Advocacy Center at 3200 Sumner Street Lincoln, Nebraska 68502.
