In memory of William Claiborne who died Sept. 27,
1809 aged 61 years.
William Claiborne was born 22 July 1748 at "Sweet Hall", King William County, Virginia, the son of Colonel Nathaniel Claiborne and Jane Cole of "Bolthrope", Warwick County, Virginia. He was the first son of their seven children. He was a member of House of Burgesses in 1768 and 1769 representing King William County. He served in the Continental Army under George Washington. He married Mary Leigh in 1770. She died in 1782 leaving 5 children under 10 years of age. William Claiborne lived 25 years after the death of his wife. He died 27 September 1809 at "Manchester", King & Queen County, Virginia.
